A duplex is defined as a dwelling which can house no more than two families. A duplex has two street addresses. Duplex addresses need not have the same street address, but if they do, they must have a unit identifier.

    i.e. Duplex (same street address): 574 23RD ST APT A, 574 23RD ST APT B

    Single/Duplex - Which action should I choose?
First, make sure you choose an action appropriate to the type of dwelling with which you are working (i.e. Single Unit or Duplex). Next, decide what type of action you wish to take. Are you adding a new property? Do you need to make changes to addresses on an existing property? Are there properties listed which you no longer own (in which case you need to delete that property)? Choose the appropriate action.

If you need to change the owner-occupied status of a duplex, choose 'Modify an Existing Duplex Property'.

    Duplex Owner Occupied Status
If the owner of a duplex lives in the duplex, then the duplex is 'owner-occupied'. Place a check next to the owner's unit.

Note: For the duplex to be owner-occupied, at least one of the duplex's addresses must match the primary address on the business license.

i.e. Building (with identifier): 3765 HARRISON BLVD APT A101, 3765 HARRISON BLVD APT A102... Building identifier is 'A'

Building is not available for this action
Units may not be added to nor deleted from a triplex or fourplex. If you wish to change from one to another, the property must be deleted, then readded under its new distinction. A building must also have at least three units; therefore, buildings with 3 units will also not show up in this list (if the action of deleting units is selected).

    What is a Unit?
A unit is a location occupied by a single familty, such as an apartment. Each unit has its own unique identifier, and thus its own address. Triplex, Fourplex or Apartment Complex Owner Occupied Status
If the owner of a triplex or fourplex lives at the property, then the property is 'owner-occupied'. Place a check next to the owner's unit. Buildings with more than four units do not carry the 'owner-occupied' distinction, since the fees (whether the owner lives in the building or not) are no different for buildings with 5 or more units.

Note: For the property to be owner-occupied, at least one of the property's addresses must match the primary address on the business license.

For a triplex or fourplex: When the business license's primary address appears, if unit information is not present (and the units have the same street address), please add the unit information to the primary address.

Unit - Which action should I choose?
First, you need to decide whether you are working with property, building, or unit information (see Property, Building, and Unit definitions for more information). Next, decide what type of action you wish to take. Are you adding a new building? Do you need to make changes to unit numbers on an existing property?
